The Beers of May 2016

Welcome to the first installment of “The Beers of…” At the end of every month I’ll be sharing with you all the new beers I’ve tried that month. I’ll give you a list of what each beer is, some general information on it, and some of my thoughts (assuming I remember what I was thinking in the moment.). Hopefully you’ll find some new things to try and have some suggestions for things I should try as well.

The Beers of May 2016

May was an exciting month and I got to try a LOT of new beers. I started the month up on Mammoth Mountain, then headed to Chicago, started using a new beer delivery service, and wound the month up down in Santa Barbara. This post will be a little long, but there were so many good beers this month.

So without further ado, I give you The Beers of May 2016

Wolf Among Weeds -3/5
Golden Road Brewing
Double IPA
8% ABV, 80 IBU
Hoppy, oaky, semi-sweet with mild bitterness. Great mouth feel and not overly carbonated.

The Beers of May 2016

Double Nut Brown -3.75/5
Mammoth Brewing Company
Porter
5.5% ABV, 25 IBU
This was super nutty with some nice coffee notes and really easy to drink. Perfect for when I came down from a day of shooting and snowboarding.

A Little Crazy -4/5
Revolution Brewing Company
Belgian/Pale
6.7% ABV, 35 IBU
I’m a huge fan of Revolution and was super excited to try A Little Crazy; and it was the perfect beer to sit and drink while chatting with my brother. Not overly bitter or hoppy and left a pleasant after taste.

The Beers of May 2016

Hardcore Chimera -5/5
Finch Beer Company
DIPA
9% ABV, 80 IBU
It’s rare that I rate a beer this high but the Hardcore Chimera surprised me with how smooth it was. The mellow citrus notes really played well with the hoppiness and just made for a really enjoyable drinking experience.

Chile Ale
6.4% ABV,  35 IBU

Le Petit Prince Farmhouse Table Beer -3.75/5
Jester King Brewery
Farmhouse
2.9% ABV, 30 IBU
Super light with nice peppery hints and not overly wheaty. The low ABV makes this a very drinkable beer (hint hint: if you want to drink all day, this is a good beer to choose).

The Beers of May 2016

Tart and Soul -4.25/5
Ninkasi Brewing Company
Sour
5% ABV, 7 IBU
Tart without having that mouth puckering, stomach ache that you get with other sours.

The Beers of May 2016

Hop Cooler -3.75/5
Ninkasi Brewing Company
APA
7.2% ABV, 74 IBU

The Beers of May 2016

The Beers of May 2016

Best Damn Root Beer -4.25/5
Best Damn Brewing Co
Root Beer
5.5% ABV
Wow! A hard root beer that actually tastes like root beer! You ahve no idea how long I;ve been looking for a hard root beer that doesn’t taste like malt liquor.

The Beers of May 2016

Stone Pale Ale 2.0 -3.5/5
Stone Brewing
Pale Ale
6% ABV, 55 IBU
Fairly solid pale ale, but the 1.0 version of this one was better to me.

The Beers of May 2016

The Pitchfork Pear Cider -3.25/5
Sonoma Cider
Cider
6% ABV, 1 IBU

The Beers of May 2016

Floris Apple -3.75/5
Brouwerij Huyghe
Fruit Beer
3.6% ABV
SUPER light and fruity, but not overly sugary. I could drink this all day.

The Beers of May 2016

Tart Cherry Gose -3.25/5
Fieldwork Brewing Company
Gose
4.9% ABV
This is the way a sour or gose should taste, tart but not ulcer inducing.

Citrus and Piney -4/5
The Hop Concept
DIPA
8.5% ABV, 75 IBU
Big citrus notes but doesn’t hit you over the head with it. Surprisingly mild hoppyness and not bitter at all.

The Beers of May 2016

Hoppy Poppy IPA -3.25/5
Figueroa Mountain Brewing CO
IPA
6.5% ABV, 60 IBU
Surprisingly smooth and mild with a mild aftertaste and decent mouth feel.

The Beers of May 2016

MadeWest IPA -3.75/5
MadeWest Brewing Company
IPA
7.1% ABV, 56 IBU
Super mild for the ABV, mellow hop taste and easy to drink. There’s almost a pine taste to the hops that make the beer feel woodsy and earthy.

The Beers of May 2016

Rincon Red -3.75/5
Santa Barbara Brewing Company
Red Ale
5.5%
Very light bodied and smooth to the taste. The Rincon was a great beer to start off a morning of drinking and would pair great with food.

The Beers of May 2016

Santa Barbara Blonde -0.5/5
Santa Barbara Brewing Company
Pilsner
5% ABV
Coors has a little brother? Sometimes I really enjoy blonde ales, this is not one of them.

Sunset Lager -1.75
Santa Barbara Brewing Company
Lager
5.5% ABV
Second beer into the flight and I’m not so impressed by SBBC.

The Beers of May 2016

Old Town Nut Brown -2.25/5
Santa Barbara Brewing Company
Brown Ale
5% ABV
Not terrible. It has a super nutty aroma and tastes even nuttier. Might be right for some people, but was just a little much for me.

Yankee Blade IPA -3.5/5
Santa Barbara Brewing Company
IPA
Really solid IPA, not too hoppy or overbearing. If you check out SBBC this would be the one to try.

State Street Stout -2.75/5
Santa Barbara Brewing Company
Stout
4.2% ABV, 37 IBU
With this I’ve noticed that SBBC like to go over the top with their flavors; so if you really like coffee flavor this might be alright.

Not Urbock, It’s Maibock -3.5/5
The Brewhouse
Maibock
6.6% ABV
Mild and tasty, plus puns are a great way to name beers.

Social Disorder Porter -2.25/5
The Brewhouse
Porter
5.9% ABV
Smooth with light hints of coffee and chocolate; really easy to drink.

The Beers of May 2016

Belgian Lace Honey Blonde -1.25/5
The Brewhouse
Blonde Ale
4.4% ABV
Apparently I don’t like blonde ales…

Condor Pilsner -2.25/5
The Brewhouse
Pilsner
5.1% ABV
Light and mellow with some mild carbonation. Not bad.

El Citra Session IPA -3.25/5
The Brewhouse
IPA
4.4%
This was the best way to round out this flight and afternoon of drinking.

Thanks for checking out the beers this month, I know it’s a long list (most months won’t be this long) but I hope there was something interesting in there for you all to try. Be sure to follow me on Untappd, Twitter, and Instagram for more beery goodness.
