NAB 2016 Top 10: Part 2

I’ve been on a hiatus from blogging regularly, but I figured the best way to come back is with come NAB coverage (and I apologize for this being so far after the show, I got swamped with unexpected work). This year, instead of doing a product spotlight on lots of different products, I’m going to narrow down what I saw into just 10 products that I think were awesome (or just excited me) because they have new features, are cost-effective, or are things I may actually get. *note: product descriptions are just an overview, I encourage you to visit the links to find out more information.*

Each day I’ll focus on something new or exciting that I saw. These are being released in no particular order.

*Got behind in April, so these posts are leaking into May.*

This year I went back to Emotimo to see what was new and they had something that right away I knew would be a perfect solution for a lot of what I shoot, the Cart. More and more I've been finding myself shooting product shots and demos that just ache for something more than just a close up, locked down shot. But when I've tried to add movement to those shots with things like the Ikan LTTD or Pico Dolly I inevitably end up with something shaky or jerky from my own movement. The Cart will rectify all of this. By utilizing the TB3, the Cart offers steady motion controlled dolly movements. If you've already got the TB3 (something I've been wanting to get for the last year) then you can just add that to the Cart base and create stunning curved movements. The Cart has one stable axle that bolsters most of the weight load and one that rotates 90° in either direction, offering a huge range of curved options. By adding the motion controller to the dolly it takes the operator hands off the unit and creates steady and smooth movements that can be recreated take after take. The TB3+Cart combo works in both video mode and in frame-by-frame mode, meaning you can use it to do timelapses and stop motion. While I was on the floor I asked the Emotimo guys about the weight limit for the Cart and they said they were still testing it but are estimating about a 50lb limit, so it'll fly the TB3 head and camera with ease. The TB3 head itself is only rated at ~12lbs so we're still limited there, but a stripped down C300 will still work on it. One of the things I love most about Emotimo (besides being a local company) is their price; the TB3 three axis controller is only $950, and you can pick up a Cart with the TB3 for only $1300, making it extremely reasonable and accessible for indie filmmakers and those looking to get into motion control without spending an arm and a leg. All of Emotimo's products and sample videos are available on their site. Post NAB 2015 Spotlight: Emotimo Cart

Movie Review: Fury

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie while it was still in theatres and still fresh enough to deserve a review. But, last weekend Loretta and I saw Fury (2014) (imdb.com) and were absolutely stunned by the beauty of the shots and intensity of the emotions. This was the first WWII film since Saving Private Ryan (imdb.com) that gripped me in an utterly visceral way. Like usual, I’ll try to keep this short and not give away anything about the film.

Bunraku (2010) Review

It’s been a while since I’ve done a movie review and I stumbled upon a film last night that I think REALLY needs to be shared. I saw an interview online with Josh Hartnett (imdb.com) talking about leaving the Hollywood system for an independent route. A lot of what he was saying I agreed with and during the interview they showed clips from some of his more recent films, including Bunraku (imdb.com). It looked right up my alley so I found it on Netflix Instant and thoroughly enjoyed the next two hours.
