Paying PA's

Because I’m on summer break from Columbia College I’ve been browsing the job boards with a lot more fervor than usual; and I’ve noticed a trend in the listings that really angers me. It seems like every posting for production assistants (PA’s) wants to get the work done for free. I’ve noticed a few posting that go as far as asking for entire crews for free. As a producer, and an experienced filmmaker, I see a lot of things wrong with this.

Wide Open Camera Combat Cage Review

A while ago, I helped fund Jared Abrams and Wide Open Camera’s Kickstarter campaign for the “Combat Cage.” Check out the campaign here: kickstarter.com. It recently came in, and I’ve been putting it through the paces with my GoPro Hero3 for the last few weeks.

Lauren Santee "Let Down" Music Video Shoot

I spent the majority of last weekend working on the set of Lauren Santee’s (laurensantee.com) new music video “Let Down.” The video was produced through Posthouse Pictures (facebook.com); meaning it was shot and directed by Kevin Otterness (kevinotterness.wordpress.com). This is the second music video I’ve shot with Kevin, and I really enjoy working with him. The shoot flew by and the entire crew was absolutely phenomenal.

The Everything Post

Wow, it’s been over a month since my last post… and what a crazy busy month it’s been. So far 2013 is shaping up really well, and there are a lot of things I’m working on for later this year. I haven’t given a solid update on the state of things in a while so, this post will hopefully catch us all up before I move into summer reviews and tutorials.

I took some time after the end of the semester to decompress. I took Loretta and Zero camping in Michigan (see Loretta’s post about it here: creatively-driven.com), I sorted through my office and apartment, I cleaned out the clutter and got reset, and now I’m finally ready to look back at how much actually happened that last few months.

Perpetually Playing Catch Up

After weeks of non-stop working, I finally “took a day off.” The last few months have been crazy hectic. Between schoolwork, work-work, a new puppy, personal projects, and blogs, I haven’t had a solid day to just relax. Yesterday and today I took time to clean my apartment and cook a decent meal, but my “day off” is in quotes because the work never ends. I have one more production (shooting this week) to get through before I can really take a breather. And, with NAB next week, it couldn’t come at a better time.

DFocus version3 VS. version4

I know it’s been a while since I posted, but to make up for it, I’m coming back with a comparison between the DFocus System (dfocussystem.com) follow focus Version 3 and Version 4.

Grad School Week… Uhh… Yes.

Let me just say that time flies extremely quickly.

The first week of the semester still feels like it was last week, but alas, it wasn’t. I know I said I was going to try to stay up to date with these, but it’s been 6 weeks since the last update. I promise you that wasn’t because of design. But, this is grad school, and if I wasn’t slammed with work, I think I would be angry with the program.

It’s hard to think that I’m half way through the semester already. And it’s even harder to think that at the end of the semester I’ll be half way through the program. There’s been a lot of work, and there’s a lot more ahead of me. But, I honestly can’t wait for it.

Deconstructing the Blogroll: planet5D, REDUSER, cinema5D

A while ago I started a blog series to deconstruct my blogroll of the sites and people that I follow. These are the places I go to for information, tips, and tricks about filmmaking.

First off, sorry for not posting last week.
For this week I’m covering some of the forums I frequent. planet5D (planet5D.com) and cinema5D (cinema5D.com) both are (or at least started out as) DSLR centric filmmaking forums. But, both now are focused on general filmmaking. REDUSER (reduser.net) is a forum that covers… you guessed it… RED. I visit a lot of different forums, but these are three that I visit more often.

Grad School Week 19

Towards the end of last semester, I really fell behind with updating about my grad school experience. But, it’s a new year, and a new semester, I’m going to pick it back up again.

This semester is going to be a doozy. We’ve got 13 credits (5 classes) and each of them is going to have a heavy workload. As busy as the next 16 weeks is going to be, I’ll do my best to stay current with these weekly posts.

So, this is Semester 2, Week 1; or the 19th week overall. And since it’s the first week, I’ll give you an overview of the courses and teachers I’ve got.

Monthly Inspiration: Quentin Tarantino

Monthly Inspiration is a blog series that’s about what inspires me; filmmakers, styles, actors, scripts… each month, I’ll cover one new piece of inspiration. Hopefully I can turn you on to something that will inspire you as well.

I’ve missed the last few months of Monthly Inspiration, but it’s a new year, and I’m back with a vengeance. Who better to be inspired by this month than indie film’s wet dream, Quentin Tarantino (imdb.com)?
