Post NAB 2014 Spotlight: Red Giant Universe

Now that the 2014 NAB show in Las Vegas is over it’s time to do some coverage! Starting on April 11th and going until the end of the month I will be doing a spotlight on what was good at the show. Each day I’ll focus on something new that I saw. *note* These are being released in no particular order*

**note** I apologize for the delay in these posts, I’ve been battling WordPress back-end bugs.**

Red Giant Universe

I don’t usually spend a lot of time in the south hall, but I do make a point to at least walk through and see what’s new. It’s mostly post stuff and a lot of it goes over my head, but I stopped at the Red Giant (redgiant.com) booth and really fell in love with Red Giant Universe.

Red Giant offers amazing post software that works individually or as plugins for Adobe or FCP. And with Universe they’re stepping their game up. Universe is a suite of effects that are easy to use and add great production value to your projects.

They’re offering Universe on a subscription basis, much like Adobe is doing. So you can subscribe and get free access to all the effects for 30 days, then you can choose to pay or not. If you choose not to pay, you can still use the free effects to your heart’s content.

The effects cover everything from transitions, to warping, masking, and shading, and even coloring tools. Some of the ones I’m really excited for are Knoll Light Factory EZ; which is a super simple way to add lens flares that look amazing; and Zoom Blur; which allows you to create a center focus area and blurring out from there (perfect for faking tilt shift effects).

Red Giant Universe is still in public beta, so you can sign up now and start using the suite. But when it launches, Universe will have a couple of different pricing options. The monthly plan is $10 and includes full access, but you can save some money and go with the annual plan for $99. But what’s really awesome is that they will be offering a lifetime purchase for $399, and this includes all updates for as long as Universe exists.

Red Giant makes a ton of amazing applications and plugins; even for a non-editor, like me, Red Giant stuff is incredibly useful. . You can find them all on their website, redgiant.com; and you can follow them on twitter (@RedGiantNews) for updates on the Universe roll out.
