Freelancing: 3 Tips for Overcoming Mistakes

For the first time in my career I’m now working as a full-time freelancer. Not having a staffed position is new to me and freelancing has a steep learning curve. But as I pick things up I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned in a series of blogs called Freelancing.

For the first installment I’ve decided to focus on something that applies to everyone, not just freelancers: overcoming mistakes. We’ve all made mistakes. And if you haven’t, you will. Overcoming these mistakes is a crucial part of freelancing. If the people you work with can’t rely on you, they’ll stop hiring you. How to deal with accidents and mistakes sounds like common knowledge, but a lot of people can’t (or just don’t) handle the situations well.

2014: A Post Mortem

The holidays have come and passed and 2014 has come to a close. As we move forward in the new year it’s important to look back at all that 2014 was so that we can make the best of 2015. For me, this year can be described in one word: transition. I started the year as a grad student in Chicago, moved to San Francisco, was in LA for a while, and am now working as a full-time freelancer. It’s been a great year with lots of ups, some downs, and has finally started me down the path I want to be on.

Monthly Inspiration: Shane Hurlbut

Monthly Inspiration is a blog series that’s about what inspires me; filmmakers, styles, actors, scripts… each month, I’ll cover one new piece of inspiration. Hopefully I can turn you on to something that will inspire you as well. Sorry that this month (November) is late, life happens.

I’ve talk a lot in the past about Shane Hurlbut (hurlbutvisuals.com) but I’ve not done an MI on him yet. And for the next few months I’m going to be focusing on the Directors of Photography (DP’s) that influence my work. What better way to start than with the person that I’ve learned most of what I know about cinematography from.

Illumination Experience- Day 2

I spent the last weekend participating in the Illumination Experience Cinematography Tour (illumination.mzed.com). For two days I got hands on education from one of my favorite DP’s of all time, Shane Hurlbut (hurlbutvisuals.com). Being able to learn from an amazing cinematographer and speaker was truly invaluable.

Creating Panoramic Photos

One of my favorite things to do with photography is creating panoramas. Simply put, panoramic photos are a multiple images stitched together to create a larger piece. These used to be very difficult to create. You needed to use a tripod, account for large amounts of image overlap, and then line the images up by hand. After all this work, they usually still didn’t look right.

A while ago I was talking with some guys on set about movies that we go back to over and over again. There were a lot of the usual answers; then someone said Donnie Darko (imdb.com). This started a nice long conversation about Jake Gyllenhaal (imdb.com) movies. What I took away from the conversation was: he’s been a pretty solid constant in my movie appreciating life, and he’s done pretty much everything.

Movie Review: Fury

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie while it was still in theatres and still fresh enough to deserve a review. But, last weekend Loretta and I saw Fury (2014) (imdb.com) and were absolutely stunned by the beauty of the shots and intensity of the emotions. This was the first WWII film since Saving Private Ryan (imdb.com) that gripped me in an utterly visceral way. Like usual, I’ll try to keep this short and not give away anything about the film.

what mandy thinks: Small Talk: Jeremy of Widen Media

An awesome web designer friend asked if she could feature me on her “Small Talk” series about the process of blogging. Of course I said yes! This is a reblog of that post.

Life Update and The Jog

Hello there readers. It’s been a while since my last post on my studio build (widenmedia.com) and even longer since my last update on the status of my Columbia College thesis film The Jog (widenmedia.com); so I thought I would catch you all up on what has been going on.

Monthly Inspiration: Josh Hartnett

Monthly Inspiration is a blog series that’s about what inspires me; filmmakers, styles, actors, scripts… each month, I’ll cover one new piece of inspiration. Hopefully I can turn you on to something that will inspire you as well.

A few months ago I did a review of the super stylized, noir film Bunraku (widenmedia.com) starring Josh Hartnett (imdb.com). After watching it I dug through Hartnett’s IMDB page and I realized just how many roles I’ve really enjoyed him in. He’s a strong actor that can handle horror, comedy, action, and drama. But his views on the process of filmmaking are what I’m really inspired by.

Airbox Lights vs. Diffusion Comparison

A couple of months ago I posted a review of the Airbox Lights Model 1×1 (widenmedia.com). After I posted the review I got some questions and comments wondering what the benefit of the ABL was over the supplied diffusion sheet that comes with most LED lights.

MXL Microphone Review

I’ve been looking to expand my audio gear for a while and when I was at NAB I found the MXL line of microphones. Here’s what I thought when I first saw them: MXL at NAB. Well, I finally got my hands on some and decided to test them.

New Project: FlipClip

I got brought in by Beyond Pix (beyondpix.com), to DP a short promotional piece for the launch of FlipClip, an app that allows you to easily create animated photo albums. The idea behind the shoot was that it was going to all be POV, which meant that I had to operate without using my hands.

Project Update: Uncle John

Back in August and September of 2013 I worked on a feature film called Uncle John (unclejohnfilm.com). You may remember me talking about the production in my “On Set With” blogs (Part I) (Part II). Uncle John is now finished! This is the first feature that I’ve 1st AC’ed on so being able to see it is an intense feeling for me.

Monthly Inspiration: Harold Ramis

Monthly Inspiration is a blog series that’s about what inspires me; filmmakers, styles, actors, scripts… each month, I’ll cover one new piece of inspiration. Hopefully I can turn you on to something that will inspire you as well.

If you’re a child of the 80’s or 90’s chances are you grew up with Ghostbusters (imdb.com). I know I sure did; hell I was Egon for Halloween 6 years in a row. For that fact alone it makes Harold Ramis (imdb.com) worth showcasing for Monthly Inspiration. But as I grew up and got more into watching movies the films he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in had a huge impact on my life.

Airbox Lights Review

Back at NAB I picked up a couple of Aibox Lights (airboxlights.com) right off the show floor. I wrote about these inflatable soft boxes during my coverage of the show (widenmedia.com), but I finally got around to properly testing them out. Overall I was really happy with how they performed.

Freelancing: The First Month

Now that I’m finally done with grad school (with the exception of finishing The Jog) it’s time to get to work; and this is the first time that I’ve been a full-time freelancer. Going into my first month I was a bit concerned, but it’s been a busy month (to which I’m grateful). I’ve worked with some amazing friends and filmmakers on some pretty kick ass projects.

Bunraku (2010) Review

It’s been a while since I’ve done a movie review and I stumbled upon a film last night that I think REALLY needs to be shared. I saw an interview online with Josh Hartnett (imdb.com) talking about leaving the Hollywood system for an independent route. A lot of what he was saying I agreed with and during the interview they showed clips from some of his more recent films, including Bunraku (imdb.com). It looked right up my alley so I found it on Netflix Instant and thoroughly enjoyed the next two hours.

Monthly Inspiration: Freddie Wong

With the passing of NAB I took time to devote myself to being all about the gear. Now I’m back with a new Monthly Inspiration, and this month’s comes from an unexpected source. Freddie Wong has made huge waves on Youtube with his short videos and amazing special effects, the channel (now called Rocket Jump (youtube.com)) has nearly 7,000,000 subscribers.

Finally Home!

Well folks, after a two month stint in Los Angeles, to finish up classes for my MFA, I’m finally back home in San Francisco. Loretta and I have a great place to set up in the sunset and we’re both looking forward to what the future has for us. I haven’t checked in for a while, so being back seems like a good time to do so!
