Airbox Lights vs. Diffusion Comparison

A couple of months ago I posted a review of the Airbox Lights Model 1×1 (widenmedia.com). After I posted the review I got some questions and comments wondering what the benefit of the ABL was over the supplied diffusion sheet that comes with most LED lights.

My original hypothesis was that the ABL would not only soften the light, but would spread the beam out a little more than the diffusion sheet would. I finally got around to doing a comparison test, which you can see here:

I shot the comparison on my C300 in C-Log. The camera was set at an F4, ISO400, 1/48 shutter, and recorded at 23.98FPS. The lights were set at 5600K and placed ~8ft away from the subject. Because the Ikan IFB-1024’s are dimmable, I set the key to 80% and the fill to 30%.

There is a clear difference between the Airbox Lights and the diffusion sheet. But my original thought about the beam being spread out more was wrong.

Even in the ungraded C-Log footage there is a pretty noticeable difference in the way the ABL softens out the highlights versus the straight diffusion.

Both work great, but ultimately which you choose comes down to your personal preference.

I still really like the look of the Airbox Lights and would prefer to use that. But because the barn doors on the IFB-1024 have to be removed, if I was short on time or in a pinch the straight diffusion sheet obviously gets the job done.
